Voting Question: Should I have matching curtains in my apartment?

I live in a small apartment. I have 4 windows: kitchen: 59" wide x 35" tall living room (sliding door): 70" wide x 79" tall living room: 35" wide x 70" tall bedroom: 35" wide X 70" tall I want to install blackout curtains. Do you think all of the windows should have matching curtains? I've found some pretty cool ones, but of course none of them fit the kitchen window. more

Resolved Question: 1 year old baby waking up at 5am!! How much does your 1year old sleep?

My 1year old baby girl keeps waking up at 5am...whereas before she used to wake up around 6 or 6.30am. This is making me ill. I really tried hard to do things right with her sleep and now for the last 2 months, it seems to have all gone wrong. she is a happy baby and eats well...and has no trouble actually settling down to sleep. She has two naps during day. one at around 8.30 -10am. then another at 1-2.30 pm. she sleeps any time betweeen 7.30 and 8pm...and sleeps well. But just gets up so early! Shes not getting enough sleep - only 9 - 9 1/2 hours at night. Surely that can't be good for her. It isnt good for me:) I got black out blinds form Ikea...and all they do is black out the strips of light at the actual glass of the window...and spread the rest of the light across the curtains. So im wondering if its just the early morning light thats waking her. Anyone got any ideas? where do i get blackout curtains at a good price?? Any advice appreciated.thx more

Resolved Question: i need blackout curtains for my bedroom for my newborn baby, does lined mean blackout?

Resolved Question: Is it difficult to add linings to existing ready made curtains? Also can I just add black outlinings alone?

There is a lovely pair of readymade curtains on Ebay that would look great in my bedroom but they aren't lined. Is it really hard to add linings to curtains that have already been made up? I've never sewn before, is it something I could do or would it cost a lot to have a seamstress do them for me. If it is a major task then it won't be worthwhile me buying the curtains. It is just that there are 2 pairs that will fit my windows perfectly. Also, if I want the curtains to have blackout quality do I need to have normal linings and blackout linings or can you just fit blackout linings. Thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: What color curtains should I get for insulated/blackout?

I'm looking for better privacy curtains for my front living room windows. I already have a pretty (but transparent) bamboo shade, and a black decorative rod. The room is eclectic, cottage chic mixed with some mod/retro elements. There's a LOT of grey tweed/berber going on, and a lot of 70s paneling. There's some white (I like fresh mixed with natural), pops of color in accents (yellow, magenta, fern green, rust orange...), and light pine color furniture. I know, a lot mixed up! Which is why I'm having a hard time picking good (but cheap) curtains. They need to be about 63 length. Would it be too much to add another textural natural looking fabric on top of the bamboo and all the paneling and tweed? Or should I go matte and simple? Would a white or cream be too light for blackout/privacy? If I need a darker color, what would work without making the room feel too overwhelming? I'm looking at jcpenney online, walmart, plowhearth.com. I'm open to other suggestions. Thanks for the help! more

Resolved Question: Would you read this if it was published?

i blocked the paragraphs so you could read better. it's actually only two pages after you're done, can you answer the questions below? The girl gripped the stack of paper tightly as she walked at a carelessly fast pace. She was called down by the Head himself. She knows the rumors, the facts. She knows that she was gone and on the move again. They’ve dedicated years and lives to stop her, and now they let her slip again. If only she was in charge of the project, maybe she would’ve. She warned them the flaws of the plan, yet they decided to take the risks. Now? Who knows where she is. Maybe in London, Australia, Russia? Maybe she skipped for a vacation spots and went to Africa. Her hunch? Probably in America. There were an odd string of murders that started in South Dakota, went south, and ended with a missing child in Minnesota that was later found in Illinois just hours after she escaped. She has the research done. Now all she has to do is trap her. The girl reached a large, metal door with a wheel similar to a ship’s steer attached to it. She spun it once to the left, then right, right two notches more, left, left, yank, and the door swung open enthusiastically, nearly knocking her down. She stepped into the room. The room was in the shape of a circle cut into a fourth, and was brightly lit by the sunshine outside. The room had massive windows lined up, serving the purpose of a wall. Coffee colored curtains were hoisted up by fancy ropes. Bookshelves lined up against the walls that faced the building and charts and diagrams mounted stately against their stands. They were so cluttered; it looked like it was arranged in a maze. The girl walked and occasionally nudged them to get to the center of the room, where a desk and chair laid out in front of her. A man occupied the chair. The man had walnut eyes the color of glossy wood. His hair was dry and brittle and he had a light goatee. His face, usually alert, was now tired and gaunt. He raised his eyes wearily to peer at the girl. “Why, Miss Dale, sit down.” He beckoned her to a chair in front of his desk. The girl sat down. “So what exactly is your idea?” the Head asked, Dale, the girl, nervously unclipped the stack of papers, and spread them out for the Head to see. “See that?” she indicated a few pages of newspaper clipping from the stack. All of them had the words murder, homicide, and unknown scattered throughout the articles. She then drew out a map of the U.S. Large red dots were plastered on it. “The police found first body here,” Dale pointed to the first red dot. “The next few have around the same symptoms; organs pulled out through the mouth, or no injuries known.” The Head stared at them observantly. “The murders continue into Minnesota,” she pulls out two other article clippings. “They found the body in Illinois. She was only three.” The Head flipped the two articles about the missing Angela Wilsons around to read. There was a large picture in one of the articles. It featured a young toddler with wispy brown hair and a toothy grin. “Did you find anything else?” The Head at last spoke. “There was a blackout later in Illinois, in a town called Hillsville.” Dale drew out even more articles. “Please sir, I think it all fits. All the murders, they all go in a diagonal curve. I think she was moving towards Hillsville.” The Head nodded, “That seems definite.” “This is her, I know it is. All we have to do now is find a way to trap her and do it – “ The Head raised a hand and she immediately stopped. “Miss Dale, I think this–“ he swept his hand over the map with the red dots, “is definitely her.” “Thank you, sir. Now, if we can use my plan to – “ “But –“he stopped her again. “But I think you missed a step Miss Dale. Actually, two steps.” Dale looked as though she had been clubbed over her head. “Tell me Miss Dale, who are we supposed to after? Who are we suppose to chase?” “She of course!” “Yes, but she is inside somebody isn’t she? It is most likely a girl, and even more likely, an infant or a toddler. So which girl are we supposed keep an eye on?” Dale swallowed. She tripped, she made a mistake. “I shall find the most likely person, sir.” “Yes you will. Now, let me help you,” the Head said, “You know what the girl might look like, am I right?” (Dale nodded vigorously) “Usually their eyes are different, abnormal. We will need a lookout for every possible target. This is where you come in.” “What?” “You will be an agent. We will change your name, definitely. Perhaps not your first name, but definitely your surname. We will also be creating a fake history of you that you will need to memorize.” Was this happening, Dale thought. She is being promoted! “So all you have to do is find the most likely targets, I don’t care how many there is, and present them to me. As a treat, I’ll let you choose which target you want<continued> “So all you have to do is find the most likely targets, I don’t care how many there is, and present them to me. As a treat, I’ll let you choose which target you want to be stationed at.” “Thank you ,sir” Dale breathed. “so, shall I go? Now?” she made a motion as if to gather the papers. “Ah, yes. Imeadiately, Miss Dale. In the meantime, I should be getting started on my part too…” he stood up from his chair and strode to the door. But as his hand turned the door, he paused. “Miss Dale?” he called. “Yes?” Dale said from her stack of messily piled stack of paper. “Did you take care of the police?” he asked quietly. Dale smiled and nodded, “Yes.” She didn’t explain how. 1. Does it raise suspense? 2. is it confusing? (aka does it make your head hurt) 3. Does it need more details? (i purposely didn't put a lot of physical detail about Dale) 4. Would this be a good intro to a book? more

Voting Question: Old Age Question: Soft or hard mattress?

Hey, I have a 1 and 1/2 year old firm mattress -- and I've always had a bit of trouble sleeping on it. I have scoliosis of the spine (where your spine curves outwards slightly) - it isn't bad but enough to cause soem back pain during nights. I dont really get a decent sleep any more and I think its due to my mattress. I went to a hotel in Nottingham and I slept like a baby! Literally! Am also going to consider blackout curtains as mine let in the light too much. Any thoughts/recommendatioins would be much appreciated. Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Would you read a book with this as the first part of the prologue? Please be honest.?

'Boom! Boom! The bed shook beneath Ben. He opened his eyes sleepily. “Ben! Anita! Wake up!” Mama shouted from the hall. “Air raid – get to the shelter!” Ben jerked wide awake. He pulled on his dressing gown and slippers and felt for his gas mask that always sat on his bedside table at night. It was missing. “Mama, my gas mask!” he yelled. Mama ran into his room and tripped over a brown box. “Here; it fell off, now come on, hurry.” Mama thrust it into his hands. It was cold, even with his robe on. Mama ran out of Ben’s room and down the hall to Anita’s. Ben flattened his school cap onto his head and ran down the stairs to Father at the front door. Father peered through the window, pulling the blackout curtain a little way away from it to see through. Ben stared outside through the crack at the same time. “Anita, honey, you have to hurry,” Ben heard Mama say from upstairs. “Grab your dress and I’ll dress you in the shelter.” Mama and Anita ran down the stairs and Mama switched off the lamp in the hall. The house plunged into total darkness. “Get away from the window Ben – and you too David. You know how dangerous it is in a raid.” Mama opened the front door and pushed Ben and Anita and Father out before she followed and closed the door, then opened it a crack. “Why’d you open it, Mama?” Anita asked. “So if a bomb hits it it won’t blow up as easily – well, that’s what the polititions say, anyway. Come on; get to the shelter as fast as you can. It’s not safe here.” Mama grabbed Anita’s hand and hurried off across the street to walk in the shadow of the houses. Ben and Father followed. Ben looked around him as he walked. There were tremors in the ground every second or thereabouts, but nothing was falling close by. In the sky, Ben saw trails of light after dark blots flew through the air. After they disappeared behind a house, he waited for the explosion that always followed a second later. Boom! And a rush of fire would blow into the sky. They reached the air raid shelter and climbed down the steep ladder to the hard dirt floor. A dozen or so people had already arrived. “Come over here, Anita,” Mama said, “and I’ll change you into your dress now.” She beckoned Ben over as well. “Don’t make too much noise, you two. People here are worried and they’re trying to sleep. Don’t disturb them or you’re likely to get into hot water. Do you hear me?” Ben nodded and Anita glanced at her brother and followed suit. Mama nodded in satisfaction then sent Ben away so she could dress Anita. Ben wandered around the shelter until he found a corner where he could lean against the wall. More people came in and they settled themselves into their own particular places. The night wore on, and Ben fell asleep. He woke, just before midnight by his watch, to Anita saying loudly, “Mama, where’s Kitty?” She sounded as if she’d said it once or twice before and had not received an answer. Ben glanced at his sister. “Mama! Where is she?” Anita cried. Beneath their feet, the ground trembled again and a muffled but loud roar exploded from outside. “Close one,” one of the men grunted. “Next street, mebee.” Anita cried again, even more desperately. “Mama! Kitty!” She glanced at Mama’s face and saw the truth at last. Anita squealed, waking up everyone, even old Mrs Grunmeer, who slept through everything. “No! Kitty!” Anita ran across the floor before anyone realized what she was doing and climbed the ladder. “Anita, no!” Mama and Father yelled after her, struggling onto stiff legs. Ben ran after Anita but Mr Phillips held him back as Mama and Father climbed up the ladder after Anita. He heard the door slam after Anita, then open for Mama and Father. “Let me go!” Ben shouted. He wrestled himself out of his dressing gown and climbed the ladder two rungs at a time. He pushed open the door and stood in the doorway. Mama and Father had run halfway down the street already, but Ben only caught a glimpse of Anita’s bright pink dress as she disappeared through the door. Ben knew he should move, should run after Mama and Father before someone held him back, but his legs would not move. He watched his parents from the doorway. Suddenly time stood still. A whistling from the sky penetrated Ben’s thoughts and he turned to find the bomb. He saw the stream of light, then heard a dull thud as the bomb landed – on his house. Someone yelled, “Anita!” Ben realized it was him. Minutes later, though it was only a second, the roar came from Ben’s house, knocking his parents over a hundred feet away in the road. Almost instantly after that, a giant flower of fire blosomed inside Ben’s room then exploded, breaking the windows and spraying glass over the road. Time righted itself then and Ben sprinted down the road yelling, “Anita! Mama! Father!” He stopped as his parents stood up and tried to run closer but the heat was too strong. They turned away and came back to Ben. Ben sa more

Voting Question: Can I claim a refund?

I bought made to order curtains at £650 from a local small retailer. The curtains are made beautifully, but when hung at the window, the curtains take on a different appearance in that there is a small diamond to the front of the cloth, which is what I had bought, but when hung, the thread at the rear of the material, which is in stripes, to make the diamond at the front, shows through, giving an awful striped effect to the curtain and the diamond is lost completely. The retailer said his staff could not have known this would happen ( neither did I !) as he had over 400 sample fabrics in stock. He said he had contacted the manufacturer who recommended blackout lining and if I paid another £150, which is cost to him, plus £50 for the alterations, he would have them redone using blackout lining as opposed to ordinary lining. But why should I pay for something that is not our fault and not of the appearance as sold to us? Blackout lining is heavier and will not work well in a pinch pleat, which is what I had wanted and ordered. Can I demand a full refund? I don't want "stripy curtains" and I don't want heavy blackout lining. This was not what I had believed I had bought. HELP!but surely I should have been advised that they would not look the same when hung? I was shown the fabric, and that of a contrasting colour to ick up the "diamond" to make buttons to match the diamond which I agreed looked great and had these attached to the pencil pleat, but I can't even see the diamond colour because of the stripes. Surely the retailer should know the product they sell and advise customers accordingly allowing the customer to make a choice? If advised the effect was like this I would not have bought them but selected an alternative. The owner even agreed the looked awful and hence contacted the manufatcurer who suggested heavy blackout lining. I really don't see why I should have to pay more for something that will not look as I was advised and sold. Is there no law such as the "sale of goods act" I can utilise to claim a refund? more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this story? (short excerpt)?

“Ok let’s go up here and our lockers our right next to each other.” I informed him as we jogged up the stairs. He nodded and accidently bumped into me. I laughed quickly so he knew it was ok. Once we were at the top I began to feel dizzy and sick. I blinked my eyes rapidly so that I could see where I was going when suddenly the door was in front of me. Slam I crashed into it and blackout. The last thing I felt was a strong arm holding me up… Chapter 2 My eyes fluttered open slowly as I heard Aaron’s voice calling my name. I looked around and saw him sitting in a chair. “Where am I?” I asked confused. “At the nurse’s office,” he answered. I nodded, but it made me feel dizzy again. I slowly moved my head as I scanned the room. The walls were white with the windows covered by purple curtains. I was laying on a green bed that was propped up. I looked back at Aaron. He was smiling at me and he took my hand. His hand was strong and way bigger than mine. I stared at our hands and smiled too, then sighed. It felt nice. “Your eyes are spectacular. They’re like a silvery icy blue color. It’s very pretty.” I blushed at the comment he gave me. He chuckled and sighed. ***This is an excerpt from a story I wrote long ago what do you think?** Plz be honest but nothing to harsh more

Resolved Question: Could some one comment on this please?

This is a story I'm writing and I would like some feedback...thank you! Chapter one It was cold. That’s all I remember of the day. I was only thirteen, but the Nazis and the Gestapo and the SS men where running around our little town banging down doors. It was in the middle of the night, and mother pulled me from my bed. “They know that there are Jews here.” She said in a thick German accent. “We must get you out.” She dressed me in thick layers, packed me a bag and sent me out. I was supposed to go to the Christian church at midnight and there was supposed to be some one there to get me. I slipped out of my house that night, and I remember that it was cold. The next few hours where a blur of running behind houses, dodging flashlights and streetlights and finally feeling almost safe in the church. There was man who told me that he was supposed to meet me her. I went with him. The next morning I woke up in a warm bed, but still in all my layers. I took them off, one by one, and folded them leaving on all but a dress and stockings. I glanced around the room. It was a plain room with blackout curtains on the windows and a bed and a dresser pushed to one wall. I opened the door and peered down the hallway. It was empty. I could see the kitchen from the room, there was the same man sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper, drinking something from a mug. I walked down the hallway and stood in the doorway. A women was at the stove, cooking up something delicious. I coughed once, and she turned around, startled. “Oh! Adi! Your awake! Please sit, we must explain to you.” she said in German, putting eggs and bacon in a late. I sat down on a chair and she slid the plate in front of me. Bacon. I can’t eat anything that’s even been cooked on the same pan as bacon. “Anything wrong, dear?” She asked. “I’m sorry, Miss, I don’t need to be rude but,” I spoke in German that was sounded crunched up and clumsy on my Dutch tongue, “Eating bacon is against our bible. Can I ask, did you cook the eggs in the same pan?” I didn’t want to sound rude, but she didn’t take it that way. “Oh, I am sorry! I have been ignorant.” She took the plate away, giving me toast and tea again. “I do speak Dutch.” She said in very smooth Dutch. “But my husband does not, so we speak German.” “Are we going to tell her or just talk to her?” The man said, putting down his paper. “Okay, well, as you know your town was raided. Your family is as far as we know, safe. You are here, and as long as you are here you cannot be Adi anymore. Your Christian name is Jean. Your names after St. Jean and you are my granddaughter because your mother went missing only days ago. We are going to dye your hair blonde and your eyebrows. You will wear contacts that change the color of your eyes, which we have a ready supply of. You will attend church every Sunday with us and if anyone asks, like we said, your mother is missing.” “Yes, Miss.” I answered. “Oh my, I didn’t tell you our names. I am Alice and that is Jerald, but you will call me Oma and you will call Jerald Granda. Now, eat up, we have a lot to do!” She exclaimed, eating the eggs and bacon that she took from me. “Um…you haven’t hear anything about raids in this town, have you?” I asked in German. “Nein!” She exclaimed. “they have raided this town many weeks ago and won’t come back unless they have a lead on us.” I nodded and bit into my toast. What would mother say now, I am pretending to be something I am not. I wonder if she is okay. After all, she if Jewish! I was tempted to ask, but did not. When I finished Oma led me up to the bathroom so she could fix my hair. Though I was very surprised that with everything dyed and my contacts in I looked like a true German child. Oma showed my that behind my dresser was a hiding spot if the Germans ever came for me. There was a door, but it did not look like a door. I was supposed to go as far back as I could so as the dark would swallow me up and you couldn’t tell that I was in there. The rest of the day was filled with telling me how to work around their little farm. They had chickens and horses! It was amazing. At that time, I would never even have guessed what was to come. ♥♥♥ In the middle of the night, the Germans came. They invaded the house. They took one look at me and laughed, for I didn’t sleep with my contacts in. Oma and Granda tried to tell them that I was German. I had no papers. They said for me to pack one bag. Oma stuffed it with food. She said she knew where they where taking me and that no one should get to this food. Then, they took me away. They threw me in the back of a green truck with another family. “You are German!” A little boy said, when the Germans slammed the back of the door. “No, No, can’t you see?! She is not German. Her eyes are brown. Tell us, how is your hair blonde?” A young girl asked. “It was the bleach that my hair was washed in. We tried to hide it with bl more

Resolved Question: My bedroom is on a LOUD busy street! I rent. What is the best way to soundproof?

I got some blackout curtains, which are also supposed to cut noise, but they don't- I've heard egg crate foam would be a good way to cut the noise, but how thick does it need to be to WORK! I sleep during the day when traffic is heavy, so it's important it completely silence the sounds to me. My best thought on my own is to spray glue four panels of that sound proof board (what is it called?) and adhere slightly larger squares of egg crate foam to it so they'll wedge in place. Any suggestions? How thick should the foam be? The window is roughly 72" x 74". Thanks!!!Thanks Wes. I've heard that white noise will obscure sounds. The problem is me. If the white noise is incidental, it works great! If I set a fan or something, I wind up listening to that! Maybe I'll try again. The panels I was thinking of have holes to difuse the sound. I think it's called "sound board" or something. I completely forgot about acoustic tile! Maybe that would take the place of the others! more

Voting Question: how can i make a roller blind from some material?

i have some gorgeous fabric i bought to make curtains for my daughters bedroom, but there isn't quite enough. I would like to make it into a blind instead, how would i do it? is there something i can put in between the front and back layers to make it a blackout blind? or at least block out some light as the fabric is very thin. I already made curtains from it, but they are about 2 cms to short and look a bit silly - but they will be long enough to make the blind from as the curtain pole is about 6" above the window frame. if i need to buy a kit i'm in the UK more

Resolved Question: Adding blackout lining behind existing curtains?

Our house came with 15 feet of perfectly acceptable unlined pinch-pleated draperies in the living room covering 4 south-facing windows. The curtains were designed to just meet at the window gaps and to be tied back on either side of each window, rather than to operate on a traverse rod, so there is no overlap of fabric (such as would exist if master carriers/slides were being used). I made blackout lining with thermal lining fabric, so that we could watch TV in that room during the day, and as a stop-gap just added it to the back of the existing curtains by hooking it onto the reverse side of the drapery glides. I simply arranged the blackout lining behind so that it overlaps and blocks all the light. However, I still can’t operate the drapes, and I want to replace the existing hardware so that I can. My problem: I can’t just sew the blackout lining on the drapes, because then there wouldn’t be any overlap for light blockage. If I tried to overlap the curtains, they would be too short to cover the expanse of windows. I would just buy a double traverse rod, and put the lining on the rear rod and the draperies on the front rod, but that would project out into the room at least 5 1/2 inches and cause the curtains to be on top of the heating vents. I would use the magnetic air-redirectors, but the curtains are to the floor. Ideally, I would buy two regular traverse rods, and mount one behind the other, but I can't find any brackets that will let me adjust the rear (lining) rod to be, say 1 ½ to 2 inched from the wall and the front one the standard 3 ½. Voting Question: What's the best way to get a baby to sleep in a little bit longer?

My 8 month old son lays down between 8-8:30 and lately he's been waking up at 5:30 and that is just so hard for me because of my husbands work I am always the one to wake up I don't have a single day to sleep in a little extra in the morning. I went and got a blackout curtain it worked one single night he slept until 7:30 (It was wonderful) but that's it. He's always typically been between 6-7 but the past week he's been up so early it hard. It's not teething. I don't know what to do ...... laying him down later does NOT help, he still wakes just as early. more

Resolved Question: How do I apply a blackout lining to my existing curtains, which are the type which feed through a pole at top?

This is for quite a big window, 96" drop and width 89". I looked into buying blackout blinds to put behind the curtains but it seems my drop is too long for blinds. I also looked at buying ready made black out curtain linings which you hook on the back of existing curtains but it looks like you need the traditional sort of pleated type of curtain to do that. Any ideas gratefully received! more

Resolved Question: How can I get curtains to hang right with blackout lining?

Hi can any experienced curtain sewers advise? I've made tab top curtains in a light cotton fabric, but with blackout lining. Resolved Question: Early Morning waking?

My son is 9 months and has recently started waking up at 4.30am every morning and deciding its time to get up. He has slept well til 6.30am up until a couple of weeks ago, and then started getting up gradually earlier and earlier. We have been following gina ford since last october with no problems. He should be up 6.30 - 7, then has his nap 9.30 - 10, and another at 12.30. At this nap though he will only sleep for about 40-50 mins, not for the 2 hours he should be. He is then over tired by about 4, but will not have any further naps, he just gets hysterical if we try. This means that by 6pm he ridiculously tired and so normally ends up in bed for the night by 6.30. We were managing to keep him up til 7.30 before this early morning waking started. I have tried feeding him in his room, giving him a cuddle, controlled crying, and putting him to bed really late. None work. There is no noises or anything at that time in the morning. He has blackout curtains. more

Resolved Question: curtain size?

I want to get total blackout curtains for my infant son's room. The inside dimensions of the window are 45.5" (L) x 59" (W). Would I get the appropriate amount of coverage if I order two premade curtains measuring 50" (L) x63 (W)? Should I be looking for more length or less width? Or do I need to order something custom? more
